New Neighbor: Upland

In late October, the BID welcomed Upland to Park Avenue South and East 26th Street in the Flatiron District. The restaurant, a partnership between Chef Justin Smillie and acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr, takes its name after the Southern California town in which Chef Smillie was born and showcases his signature California style cuisine.

“I was born in Upland, California, and the region’s straightforward approach to cooking, as well as its produce, continues to inspire me today,” said Chef Smillie. "Upland is the restaurant I've always dreamed of opening, and I'm looking forward to bringing a little twist on classic California to contemporary New York."

The menu features California-inspired dishes with rustic accents. Begin your meal with savory starters, such as Beef Tartare with black trumpet mushroom, puffed faro, anchovy & egg yolk; and Mushroom Salad with seared robiola, tatsoi, chicories & burnt shallot vinaigrette. Follow with a house-made pizza with stracciatella, pear, pecan pesto & arugula; Farro Spaghetti with Maine sea urchin, scallion & sesame; or Estrella with chicken liver, sherry, rosemary & sage. End your meal with 2 Minute Tuna with dandelion, bread crumbs, pickled onions and anchovy vinaigrette.

The restaurant is set in a casually elegant environment created by designers Roman and Williams. The main dining room is a combination of honey-colored natural oak, glossy woods, and painted copper. There are also soft green leather banquettes that make up the main spine of the room with custom light fixtures on both sides. The bar, with a scaffold of copper, is surrounded by custom designed stools and glowing bottles, reflecting the kitchen and the street of the Flatiron District.

Hours are Sunday to Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Upland, 345 Park Avenue South, at East 26th Street, (212) 686-1006.
