Digital.NYC Five-Borough Tour Event Recap

The Digital.NYC Five-Borough Tour visited Flatiron last week to discuss the vitality and growth of New York City’s tech ecosystem and talent pipeline. The event featured dual panels that navigated attendees through the Digital.NYC website and tech landscape in the city.

The free event was presented by Digital.NYC with General Assembly and the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership. Over nearly two hours, panelists discussed tech jobs, the skills necessary in an evolving tech market, and the need to introduce tech awareness at an earlier age.

“We need to be thinking about this in kindergarten,” said Hagos Mehreteab, Head of Organizational Engineering at Codecademy, formerly Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at AppNexus, which is located in Flatiron.

Echoed Kristen Titus, Founding Director of the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” Incubating visibility earlier will spur more to pursue tech careers. The Tech Talent Pipeline, established in May of 2014, endeavors to “deliver quality jobs for New Yorkers and quality talent for our businesses,” she said. “We recognize that New York City businesses, large and small, are hugely dependent upon tech talent today. That is only going to continue to grow.”

Titus and Mehreteab were joined by Jake Schwartz, Co-Founder & CEO of General Assembly, and Jayana Johnson, a NYC Tech Talent Pipeline fellow, in discussing the city administration’s support of the tech ecosystem.

The event was streamed live on April 2nd and is viewable here. The final stop on the Five-Borough Tour is on April 22nd in Harlem.
