May News Roundup

May was an exciting month in the Flatiron District – new business openings, major real estate deals, and the return of Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Below is a collection of notable news articles from the last month.

  • On Wednesday, May 20, Shake Shack officially reopened their flagship kiosk in Madison Square Park (via DNAinfo). The location had been closed for renovations since October to increase kitchen and storage space. Just for the occasion, the Shack offered the ParkBurger, containing bacon and raw cow’s milk cheese sauce, and a limited edition lager from Brooklyn Brewery. The reopening corresponded with an 8% jump in Shake Shack’s stock (via Forbe’s).
  • Nearby, The New York EDITION, a luxury hotel within the historic MetLife Clock Tower, welcomed its first guests (via The Wall Street Journal). The second floor contains a restaurant aptly named The Clocktower that overlooks Madison Square Park and features food from acclaimed London chef Jason Atherton. Ian Schrager, the creative mind behind the hotel, has been profiled in both Newsweek and The New York Times this month for his work.
  • The Flatiron District welcomed in Danish home-décor retailer Flying Tiger at 920 Broadway, on the corner of East 21st Street. The brand’s first New York City location caused an immediate splash with the store layout and amazingly low prices. Multiple media outlets have already published their own lists of favorite tchotchkes available at the fun new shopping destination (via Business Journal & amNY).
  • Commercial developer SL Green purchased the 29-story office tower at 11 Madison Avenue in one of the largest real estate deals in New York City history. Former owners CIM Group and the Sapir Organization sold the building for $2.285 billion, a figure topped only by the 2008 sale of the General Motors Building for $2.8 billion. The 2.3 million square foot property is leased by Credit Suisse, Sony, Yelp, and talent agency William Morris Endeavor, and part of the ground floor is home to Michelin-starred restaurant 11 Madison (via Real Estate Weekly).
