NYC Homelessness Update

Last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a comprehensive plan to help overhaul New York City’s services for the homeless. A centerpiece of his plan is the consolidation of the city’s two main social service agencies--the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS)--under the Department of Social Services (DSS). Steven Banks, the current head of HRA, will serve as the new Commissioner of Social Services.

Some of the reforms set out in the Mayor's homeless services plan have already started to take place with the launch of the first phase of HOME-STAT earlier this month. HOME-STAT (Homeless Outreach & Mobile Engagement Street Action Team) is a new program designed to conduct street outreach and connect homeless individuals with appropriate services.
