August News Roundup

While many think of August as a time when New York slows down, the Flatiron District proved that wrong with another eventful month of growth and activity in the neighborhood. The BID’s monthly news roundup aims to inform on the latest happenings in the area.

  • New life arrived on East 28th Street with the opening of two new restaurants – seeing an opportunity in the market, Chef Junghyun "JP" Park, former chef du cuisine at Jungsik, opened ATOBOY serving Korean banchan dishes at 43 East 28th Street (via Gothamist). Just across the street, Tarallucci e Vino opened their fifth NYC location which features outdoor dining (via Eater); Flatiron pro-tip: they offer happy hour every day from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Earlier this year, Flatiron welcomed SONY Corporation of America and its 1,800 employees to the neighborhood. Earlier this month, the tech giant opened Sony Square NYC at the ground floor of its headquarters; the retail space showcases new products and prototypes (via Crain’s New York Business).
  • Congratulations to one of Flatiron’s flagship retailers – Eataly – on the opening of their second New York City location at 4 World Trade Center. Fun fact about the store at 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue: last year they welcomed 5 million visitors – impressive! (via The New York Times).
  • Good news for the local tech sector, Silicon Valley Bank is doubling their Manhattan square footage and moving to Flatiron, at TF Cornerstone’s newly renovated 387 Park Avenue South, to be closer to their tech-based clients (via The Real Deal). Across Madison Square Park, digital content marketing platform Taboola has signed a 12 year lease for two floors of Class A space at 1115 Broadway (via Commercial Observer).
