New Neighbor: BONMi
The 23rd Street lunch crowd gained yet another exciting dining option as BONMi, a Vietnamese-inspired fast-casual restaurant, opened its second NYC location earlier this month at 119 East 23rd Street.
Like many of the other recent restaurants opening along 23rd Street, BONMi was drawn to the neighborhood’s high density of office workers and growing residential population. "When deciding where to open our flagship store, we knew we wanted a location that offered both a strong weekday and weekend business. We are surrounded by offices, co-working spaces, and residential buildings, and saw great potential in introducing our unique dining concept to the many people who visit and live in this vibrant neighborhood,” said Alexis Kukuka, Brand Director at BONMi.
The menu at BONMi takes it cue from the bánh mì sandwich, playing on the varying textures, temperatures, and flavors that are the hallmarks of Southeast Asian cuisine. Featuring composed dishes or the option to build your own meal, BONMi’s menu reinterprets this classic Vietnamese sandwich by introducing new combinations, seasonal ingredients, and a range of proteins, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
Guests can mix and match from a list of proteins to create a sandwich, salad, or bowl. Each meal is finished with a choice of house-made sauces and classic accoutrements of pickled vegetables, cilantro, spicy mayo, and cucumbers. BONMi has also created a menu of signature items that represent some of the restaurants most popular items such as the BBQ Pork Belly Bánh Mì with honey-pepper pork belly, chili lime slaw, cucumbers, and house-made barbecue sauce on a toasted baguette.
Drawing inspiration from the street vendors of Ho Chi Minh City, the décor at BONMi’s is an interplay between natural and abstract elements. Bright chairs flank wood-toned tables and high countertop seating while murals depicting scenes from Vietnamese street vendors adorn the walls.
BONMi is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
