2017 Summer Series

Flatiron Summer Series is free community programming for the neighborhood by the neighborhood. The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with local businesses, presents eight weeks of free classes & activities on the Flatiron Public Plazas, at the intersection of Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street.

Summer Solstice Sundial with MoMath: Wednesday, June 21

The BID and the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) will celebrate the Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year - on Wednesday, June 21. From 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., the BID and MoMath will host a giant Sundial Event in the North Public Plaza. Cast your shadow to mark the time on the longest day of the year and help create a large-scale human timepiece and leave your personal mark on a jumbo sundial banner that will be displayed in the nation’s only Museum of Mathematics through the end of June.

 

Tech Tuesdays in Partnership with General Assembly: Tuesday, June 20 - Tuesday, August 8

Since 2012, the BID, in partnership with General Assembly, has offered a series of tech education classes. This year, instructors from local institutions and businesses, including Baruch College - Continuing and Professional StudiesGeneral AssemblyThoughtMatter, and Touro College Graduate School of Technology, will teach classes on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. on the Flatiron South Public Plaza. Classes are free and open to the public but are subject to cancellation due to weather. Follow us on Twitter @FlatironNY for last-minute updates.

Wellness Wednesdays in Partnership with Athleta: Wednesday, June 22 - Wednesday, August 9

The BID, with Athleta, presents a series of free fitness classes on eight consecutive Wednesdays this summer. The classes are taught by instructors from local neighborhood businesses at 6:30 p.m. on the Flatiron South Public Plaza. Classes are free and open to the public but are subject to changes due to weather. Rain location is at Athleta Flatiron's studio, located at 126 Fifth Avenue at 18th Street. Location change announcements are made by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the day of the class.

*All participants must fill out and sign the release and waiver in order to participate. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the release and waiver. Please bring a printed copy of your signed release and waiver to the registration table prior to class. There will be additional release and waiver forms on site.

Throwback Thursdays: Thursday, June 22 - Thursday, August 10

On Throwback Thursdays, the BID organizes a game station that is free and open to the public on the Flatiron North Public Plaza with giant games, board games, and cornhole sets. Games will be available beginning at 11:00 a.m. Local businesses and organizations will join in on the fun to provide free cultural education and entertainment, such as a bookbinding demonstration by the Center for Book Arts from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m. each Thursday, local musicians will entertain passersby. 

New this year, the BID is partnering with Eataly & Shake Shack to host "Summer Scoops" featuring complimentary servings of Eataly's Gelato at our "Summer Scoops Kickoff" and Shake Shack's Frozen Custard at "Mid-Summer Scoops". Shake up your office happy hour, or gather the family, and head to the Flatiron North Public Plaza to mingle and network with your Flatiron neighbors.
