BID Program Spotlight: Winter Clean Team Report

Over 27 inches of snowfall, one of the coldest February months on record, and the wintry mix of this week have made this winter feel as if it is never-ending. Throughout it all, the BID’s Clean Team has fought back the snow and ice admirably to keep crosswalks on the Public Plazas and at intersections clear for pedestrians.

The day of Winter Storm Juno, while most New Yorkers were tucked away indoors, members of the Clean Team reported to the neighborhood to clear walking lanes for pedestrians. To date, they have dispersed 94 bags, or 4,700 pounds, of snow melt, plus an additional 1,000 pounds provided by the Department of Sanitation for the Public Plazas. With more snow in the forecast for this evening, their snow removal duties are not over yet, and when the snow melts, the Clean Team will work to keep crosswalks in the district free of slush - no easy feat!

On top of their snow clearing responsibilities, the Clean Team’s tasks include street-sweeping, servicing area trash receptacles, graffiti removal, power washing, painting fixtures throughout the district and maintaining the furniture on the Public Plazas. The Clean Team is contracted through Streetplus, and led by supervisors Benny Ben-Brika and Moussa Diouf. On behalf of all those who work or live in the Flatiron District, the BID thanks the Clean Team members for their hard work this winter and throughout the year.
