New York Times Magazine Cover Story

Last weekend, the North Flatiron Plaza was prominently featured on the cover of The New York Times Magazine's special "Walking New York" issue. The massive image of a young man in mid-stride was by French artist JR, who was commissioned by The New York Times

JR is known for his work in urban spaces where he pastes photographs on to pavements, building facades, and one time on billboards in Times Square. For his work in Flatiron, JR and his team arrived early in the morning hours to paste the larger than life photograph in sections. By mid-morning, the Flatiron Plaza was open to the public and the piece of work on the ground was unbeknownst to passersby.

JR then photographed the plaza from a helicopter, and at night fall, the image was washed away. The final photograph appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine on Sunday, April 26th.
