Speaker Series Recap: District Safety and Security

On Friday, May 29th, Jennifer Brown, Executive Director of the Flatiron BID, welcomed event attendees to the BID's District Safety and Security Speaker Series and noted, "nothing is more important than feeling safe where we live and work."

The morning's special guest speaker was Captain Brendan Timoney, Commanding Officer of the New York City Police Department's 13th Precinct. Captain Timoney joined the 13th Precinct in March of this year, and started in patrol with the NYPD in 1998 at the 52nd Precinct in the Bronx.

Timoney reported that the 13th Precinct was "having a very good year, with burglaries down 43% and grand larcenies down 39%." Captain Timoney also discussed the categories of crime that have increased in the precinct, some of the causes for the increases, and how the precinct is addressing them.

Leading into the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Captain Timoney discussed crime prevention tips for both residential and commercial buildings, as well as reminded attendees that awareness of their surroundings, in all environments - walking down the street, out at restaurants or bars, and even in the gym locker room - is a vital step in crime prevention. Following his presentation, Captain Timoney took questions from the audience.

For those unable to attend the Speaker Series, the 13th Precinct Community Council will meet monthly on the 1st Tuesday of the month in June, September, October and November of 2015. Meetings will be held at the 13th Precinct. On Tuesday, August 4, 2015, precincts across the city will celebrate "National Night Out Against Crime."
