December News Roundup

As 2015 drew to a close, you might have expected December to have been a quiet month in the Flatiron District. However, with lots of restaurant news and continued signs of economic growth, the neighborhood was as busy as ever. Below is our monthly roundup of notable highlights from the district:

  • Cosme, one of the Flatiron District’s hottest restaurants, received prestigious accolades throughout the month. The Mexican restaurant from world-renowned chef Enrique Olvera was rated as having one of the top 10 restaurant dishes of 2015 (via The New York Times) and named one of the top 20 Mexican Restaurants in America (via TimeOut New York). In other restaurant news, it was announced earlier this month that Daniel Humm and Will Guidara, the duo behind Eleven Madison Park, will be opening a fast-casual restaurant in the Flatiron District. The restaurant, called Made Nice, will open in 2016 (via The Wall Street Journal).

  • December was another hot month for commercial real estate in the Flatiron District. Criteo, a French online advertising company, signed a 10-year lease for 19,269 square feet at 387 Park Avenue South (via The Commercial Observer). In addition, two tenants signed leases totaling more than 11,300 square feet of space at two of Kaufman Organization’s buildings near Madison Square Park. Samuelsohn Limited, a luxury men’s clothing brand, signed a 7-year lease for a 5,418 square foot showroom on the top floor at 19 West 24th Street and Fernando Romero Enterprise, a global architecture and design firm, signed a 7-year lease for 5,909 square feet at 13-15 West 27th Street (via The Commercial Observer).

  • The Real Estate Board of New York recently released its Fall 2015 Retail Report. The report looked at average Manhattan asking rents in the city’s 17 biggest retail corridors. Although overall ground floor rents in Manhattan had slightly decreased since the last report in May, the Flatiron District proved to be a notable exception. According to the report, retail rents in the Flatiron District increased about 17% since last spring, the second highest increase in Manhattan (via Racked NY).

  • In Novemeber, the BID and the Van Alen Institute unveiled SOFTlab’s Nova, the winner of the Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition and the centerpiece of the BID’s “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” annual holiday programming. Nova was the talk of the town in December, being named one of 15 art installations not to miss in New York City (via Untapped Cities), one of Manhattan’s most captivating holiday displays (via Mommy Poppins), and one of the top seven places in New York to Instagram the holidays (via ABC New York).
