Speaker Series Recap: District Safety and Security

On Friday, May 6th, Deputy Inspector Brendan Timoney, the Commanding Officer of the NYPD’s 13th Precinct, addressed neighborhood property owners, businesses, and residents as part of the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership’s Speaker Series. The event was hosted by General Assembly at 10 East 21st Street.

Timoney reported that the 13th Precinct is having a very good year so far, with yearly decreases in almost all major crime categories including a 12.3% decrease in felonious assault and a 87.5% decrease in grand larceny auto.

In addition to giving an update of neighborhood crime and safety trends, Timoney also gave event attendees a wide range of easy crime prevention tips. These included closing and locking all windows and doors when leaving home (even on warm days), locking up belongings at the gym, and never leaving personal property unattended while in public.

Timoney also informed event attendees about the existence of fraud executed via data-skimming devices illegally installed on ATM machines or credit-card terminals in stores. In order to prevent becoming a victim of a skimming device, Timoney suggested checking card readers for any loose, bulky or mismatched hardware. Contact the police if you observe anything suspicious.

For those who are interested in hearing more about crime and safety in the neighborhood, the 13th Precinct Community Council meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the 13th Precinct, located at 230 East 21st Street.
