An Update on Local Transportation Improvement Initiatives

Over the summer, New York City has been bustling with new construction to improve the public realm. See below for updates on two of the City's public improvement initiatives in the Flatiron District.

M23 Select Bus Service

Construction for the M23 Select Bus Service began in July. Over the past few weeks, DOT’s crew has been restriping the roadway, painting bus lanes, and installing new regulatory signs. DOT will also be installing new wayfinding totems with real time passenger information. Separate crews will be along the corridor installing Transit’s fare machines. Implementation is estimated to begin in early fall.

Sixth Avenue Complete Streets

DOT is upgrading the bike lane on Sixth Avenue from West 8th Street and West 33rd Street to a parking protected bike lane to improve safety for all road users. Pedestrian safety islands will shorten crossing distances, making it safer for pedestrain to cross Sixth Avenue. Mixing zones and turn lanes will improve safety at intersections with left turns while maintaining the existing number of moving lanes. Construction along Sixth Avenue began in July. A dedicated bike lane has been painted on Sixth Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets, and will continue to extend north to 33rd Street.
