Speaker Series Recap: District Safety and Security

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership's Speaker Series is "an event for property owners, businesses, and residents in our neighborhood, so we can inform our community about important issues and topics," noted Jennifer Brown, BID Executive Director, at the Tuesday, May 20th safety and security presentation at TD Bank's 260 Park Avenue South location.

Guest speaker Deputy Inspector David Ehrenberg, Commanding Officer of the 13th Precinct since October 2012, recommended "collaborative policing" to combat area crime. "If you see something, say something," explained the 24-year police veteran, who began his career as a probationary officer. "If you think it's wrong, you have that hunch, it doesn't hurt to call 911."

Although there was a 6 percent spike in crime statistics for the 13th Precinct in 2013, Ehrenberg indicated his team is "making great headway" this year to reduce the number of grand larcenies. "We're down 9.2 percent," he said. "We care about catching the people."

Officer Vincent Arlotta of the Precinct's Crime Prevention/Community Affairs unit, which also offers free security surveys to area properties, urged residential and commercial tenants to "make sure your security people are challenging everybody who is walking into the building." And, added Ehrenberg, be aware of your own surroundings. "Pay attention to where you are," he advised, when using tech devices such as smartphones.
