May Flowers, New District-wide Plantings & Summer Ahead

With Memorial Day weekend ahead and a series of warmer, rain-free days recently, it feels like summer is on its way. Another sure sign of the return of warmer temperatures? Packed Public Plazas, all day long.

From morning to night, people gather on the Public Plazas, and to keep pace with this demand, the BID has added some additional furniture this year. There are now 225 chairs and 87 tables available for use. This summer both Flatiron Green Cafe and ilili Box will be open daily. With many grab-and-go dining options nearby, there are al fresco dining options for everyone, at every price point.

In and around the Public Plazas are 148 planters; this week new plantings went in that include Victoria blue salvia, lantana, coleus, ipomoea, balcony geraniums and the red hibiscus pictured at right. Also planted this week: white begonias and red coleus for the 39 hanging baskets that adorn streetlamp poles throughout the district and the Park Avenue South median malls with red dragon wing-leafed begonias and rose-colored pink impatiens.

Still ahead? The purple and blue pansies in neighborhood tree pits will soon be replaced with red dragon wing-leafed begonias.

Looking forward to another beautiful summer in the Flatiron District!
