23 Days of Flatiron Cheer 2017 Recap!

On Friday, December 1st, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID) kicked off its annual holiday program, "23 Days of Flatiron Cheer" on the Flatiron North Public Plaza. The program enlivened and activated the Flatiron Public Plazas and promoted the neighborhood as a shopping, dining, and cultural destination throughout the holiday season.

Preview at the Flatiron Holiday Installation Launch Event

Prior to the official launch, the BID ushered in the holiday season on Monday, November 20th with the unveiling of Flatiron Reflection, the winner of the fourth annual holiday art installation design competition. In addition to experiencing Flatiron Reflection by Future Expansion for the first time, the event featured a performance by The Jazz GalleryShake Shack's hot chocolate, small bites by ilili BOX, and premium prize wheel prizes from neighborhood businesses. You can read the event recap here.

Live on the Flatiron Public Plaza

Every Friday & Saturday from December 1st through December 23rd, between noon and 4 pm, the BID invited passers-by to take a break from the hustle and bustle with a free hot beverage from a local cafe, a chance to spin to win on the Flatiron prize wheel for a gift from a local business, and to donate to the holiday food drive for the Food Bank For New York City. Performances presented by The People's Improv Theater (The PIT) and Hill Country Live took place each Friday, and on Saturdays shoppers picked up "23 Days of Flatiron Cheer" tote bags full of neighborhood discounts. 

Over the course of the holiday program, our team handed out over 2,600 prizes from local businesses, nearly 1,500 free hot beverages, and 1,000 branded tote bags full of discounts from 14 neighborhood stores.

Winter Wellness Wednesdays

The BID partnered with eight local fitness studios in offering would-be gym-goers the opportunity to take a free morning fitness class each Wednesday. During the first three weeks of December, neighborhood studios offered 144 free morning class passes. 

Flatiron Foodies

Beginning the week of Thanksgiving in our "23 Days of Flatiron Cheer" email newsletter, notable Flatiron chefs shared their favorite holiday recipes. Delicious holiday additions from Black Barn, ilili, Eataly, Cosme & the Natural Gourmet Institute are still available for your next feast.

Holiday Flatiron History Walking Tours

Each Sunday at 11 am, the BID's professional tour guides led vistors on history-packed, holiday-themed walking tours. Our guides took attendees on a 90-minute journey through our vibrant neighborhood, viewing some of the City’s most notable landmarks. The special Flatiron Building edition on Sunday, December 3rd saw two dozen guests step inside the lobby of the historic building as they heard tales from its inception to today.

Flatiron Holiday Gift Preview Party

600 people pre-registered to attend the Flatiron Holiday Gift Preview Party at Sony Square NYC on December 12th for full immersion in virtual reality and other holiday must-haves from PlayStation for kids, teens, and adults alike. This family-friendly event included an exclusive Sony gift bag for the first 350 attendees, along with with crostini and a custom mocktail by Merakia. Attendees were able to test out the latest technology and games to add to their holiday wish list.

Winter Solstice on the Flatiron Public Plaza

The BID ushered in the official start of winter by celebrating the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. From 4-8 pm on the Flatiron North Public Plaza, tofu, chicken, and pork banh mi sandwiches were served with a free warm beverage from BONMi. The Flatiron prize wheel was spinning and visitors were able to snag one of our "23 Days of Flatiron Cheer" discount-filled tote bags. At 6 pm, locals and visitors alike helped the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) complete a gorgeous, mirrored Fibonacci Spiral puzzle. It was a fun and festive way to welcome the winter season.

Food Drive for the Food Bank For New York City

With thousands of New Yorkers experiencing hunger and hardship, the BID partnered with 19 district office locations of 16 companies to host a food drive through December 23rd to benefit the Food Bank For New York City. In addition to the donations collected by our office partners, the BID also collected non-perishable foods such as canned fruit, canned vegetables, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, and hot and cold cereal at the Flatiron North Public Plaza during Live on the Plaza events. Cash donations were also collected online.
