New Neighbor: Doonya

Doonya, a Bollywood-inspired fitness class, is now open in the Flatiron District! Doonya aspires to be a globally accessible fitness lifestyle for women and their families that instills confidence in body and mind, energizing them to be sources of joy to all who surround them.

Originally a Washington D.C. dance class, Doonya appeared on the New York fitness scene when co-founder Priya Pandya moved to the City to pursue an MBA. She began teaching classes in rented studio spaces all around the City. Finally, Doonya settled down in a studio space on the 4th floor of 1158 Broadway. Pandya said in a recent Racked article: “We were looking for studio spaces all over Manhattan, which, for someone who hasn't done it before, was quite intimidating. We know that this area [the Flatiron District] is considered the fitness center of New York, so it was important to be around that."

With eight different classes to choose from, Doonya offers the perfect dance workout for you. Doonya, “a standard program done by most DOers,” is their signature class, combining cardio and conditioning intervals of varying intensity, activating major muscle groups of abs, arms, and legs. By using your own resistance and muscle control, you will leave with a stronger core, lengthened limbs, and increased stamina. You will burn up to 800 calories during this Bollywood-inspired dance. The pre-choreographed dance routines are strung together in a sequence, making it easy to follow for first-timers and fun for seasoned DOers.

Doonya also offers Power Cardio and Abs, a high intensity class combining 20 minutes of high cardio dance fitness routines and 15 minutes of abdominal exercises to teach you how to stabilize and strengthen your core. Looking for something slower? Try Flow, Doonya’s yoga-based workout focusing on activating your muscles through holding poses and moving with intention. In this class, you will learn how to connect your mind to your muscles as you move based on Doonya’s signature form.

Classes are also offered at New York Health and Racquet Club at the 23rd Street location. Non-members can attend classes for a $25 drop-in fee.

Doonya is an AAFA and ACE accredited program.
