New Neighbor: Black Barn

Located just north of Madison Square Park, Black Barn brings elements of rustic farmhouse atmosphere to the center of the Flatiron District. Owner and chef John Doherty worked with Mark Zeff, whose architecture firm creates homes inspired by barns and farm houses, to design the interior of the space.

"We are thrilled to be a new resident of the Flatiron neighborhood here above Madison Square Park. The area is already vibrant and thriving, but we believe Black Barn brings a missing personality to the table; a unique approach to new American cuisine in the breathtaking, totally new interior space reminiscent of an upscale, urban farm house. A couple of vastly different dishes that speak to the range of guests we entertain are the Orange-Chipotle Rubbed Beef Ribs and the Curried Cauliflower Steak,” said Doherty.

The seasonal farm-to-table American menu, executed by Matteo Bergamini who was the chef at SD26, complements the rustic interior of the space. Ingredients are sourced from local farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. The dinner menu is designed to highlight dishes from different sources and cooking styles, and includes selections such as Butternut Ravioli with swisschard, toasted pumpkin seeds, and bacon and a 28 Days Dry Aged NY Strip Loin.

According to The New York Times, “they’ve opened up the entrance to the sprawling space, doubled the ceiling height and added barnlike crossbeams, smoothly finished barn siding and some industrial details.” Custom-designed furniture can also be seen throughout. The restaurant also offers four private dining rooms that can accommodate 10 to 100 diners, and the full restaurant can be booked for large events up to 300 seated guests.

Black Barn also offers the "Kitchen Table," a five course tasting menu with wine pairings for $195. The menu is created weekly to reflect the Chef’s interpretation on the season’s freshest ingredients.

Hours are Monday through Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
