New Neighbor: Duran Sandwiches

As the MAve's red balloons were cleared from the corner retail space adjacent to the hotel's lobby, Duran Sandwiches, a new quick & casual eatery specializing in open faced sandwiches, arrived in its place. Duran Sandwiches traveled to New York from Austria, where the Duran brothers, Vladimir and Tomas, opened their first location in 1969.

Though their first store specializing in open faced sandwiches opened in 1969, the Duran family has been operating bakeries and restaurants in Austria and other territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy for more than 100 years.

After seeing the success of their specialty store, the company began to expand. In 1990, the brand branched out to other countries, opening their first international location in Istanbul, Turkey. Today, Duran Sandwiches has stores in Budapest, the Czech Republic, Istanbul, and New York City. In addition to their international locations, the brand also operates seven locations in Vienna, and they hold a 70% market share in this culinary delicacy in their hometown.

The menu includes a variety of sandwiches such as turkey breast, sirloin topped with cranberry marmalade, and egg salad. There also serve delicacies, such as caviar sandwiches and traditional Hungarian salami sandwiches. You can visit the store directly or order delivery for corporate or private events.

Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Duran Sandwiches, 62 Madison Avenue, corner of 27th Street, (212) 576-1000.
