BID Program Spotlight: Social Services

The BID’s Social Services program offers ongoing assistance, program referrals, and shelter and housing options to individuals living without housing. The BID partners with Urban Pathways, a nonprofit human services agency, to send an Outreach Team into the district five times a week. Urban Pathways also coordinates with officers from the New York Police Department’s 13th Precinct to schedule periodic overnight shifts every month.

Sheriece McKenzie and Jamaar Winborne make up the BID’s two-person Outreach Team. They have both been with the Outreach Team for over two years. During that time, Sheriece and Jamaar have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of homeless individuals by helping them move off the streets and into more permanent housing. Once a client is placed or referred, Urban Pathways adds stability and independence to their lives by connecting them with family members, mental health services, and employment opportunities.

In FY 2015, the Outreach Team engaged with over 1,000 individuals and referred and placed twenty-one individuals in treatment programs, shelters, or housing. Urban Pathways also records all interactions with clients and creates detailed daily and monthly reports. This data helps the BID gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing homeless individuals in the district.
