Flatiron Summer Series Recap + Thank You Partners

Flatiron's Summer Series, free public programming--for the community, by the community--on the Flatiron Public Plazas, came to a close last week.

This year, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership expanded the full program to eight weeks, which included tech education classes called "Tech Tuesdays," fitness classes for "Wellness Wednesdays," and nostalgic games, activities, and entertainment on "Throwback Thursdays." Over the course of the summer, over 1,200 people attended the programs.

  • The program kicked-off with Solstice Poly-Star, in partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics, on the Summer Solstice -  Monday, June 20th - participants helped to build a giant star made up of a dozen 10-pointed stars. The angle of each point corresponded to the angle of the sun above New York City at Solstice noon that day.
  • On "Tech Tuesdays," classes were taught by instructors from neighborhood businesses, including General Assembly which has been a program partner since 2012.
  • In partnership with Athleta Flatiron, fitness classes on "Wellness Wednesdays" were offered. These classes were taught by fitness instructors from local fitness studios. Post-workout, participants received free smoothie samples from Flatiron Green Cafe.
  • Nostalgic games could be found on the North Plaza on "Throwback Thursdays" for some lunchtime fun. Local non-profit organizations joined us at noon to offer free activities, including a book-binding demonstration by the Center for Book Arts and journal readings by Pen+Brush in partnership with Handwritten. In the evening, local musicians offered all ages entertainment.

Thank you to our partners for a successful program this year!
